Introducing Travels With Sandy
About Sandy Lipkowitz:

My passion for travel started in my childhood. We took family vacations, driving to interesting places every year. My first summer vacation as a teacher, I spent 9 weeks traveling around Europe on my own. That did it, I had the bug. I fantasized about becoming a travel photographer. Life went in different directions and I went from being a teacher to a real estate consultant in the shopping center industry. I continued to travel. I have been to every continent except Australia and the Antarctic (on my list).

In 2007, I started We Make Travel Easy, a home based travel agency. Since I have traveled extensively, I bring to my travel consulting, the viewpoint of the traveler. How do you want to be treated and what do you want to know? This is your vacation, your experience, not mine. It is that attitude, philosophy and level of service that has earned me very loyal clients (from all over the country). In 2014, I was voted Reader’s Choice: Best Travel Agent (in San Francisco), by the “J” Weekly.

Hi Fellow Stitchers!

One of the most common interests singles 55+ have expressed is travel.

All the demographics confirm what we already know about ourselves. According to the US Travel Association, 36% of leisure travelers are 55+ (that’s us). According to AARP (June 2014 survey), 57% of us are planning a vacation in the next 12 months. Many of us are fortunate enough to have the time and resources to travel.

This is the first, of a regular column on Stitch, to answer your every question about travel. Think of me as your “Dear Abby” of travel.

Please email all those burning travel questions that have been on your mind.

  • Where to go?
  • How to pack?
  • What to do about “Fido”?
  • How can I always get TSA Pre Check?
  • Do I need a Visa? Do I need to change currency?

Whatever travel question/problem you have, I’m here to offer an answer.

But uh oh, what if you are:

  • Missing a travel companion?
  • Don’t have a spouse or partner?
  • Never traveled alone?
  • Don’t want to travel with your kids and grandkids?
  • Tired of being the 3rd or 5th wheel with friends?
  • Can’t bear to be the only single person on a group tour, again?

Never fear Stitch is here. Don’t let these concerns keep you from ticking off all those wonderful travel destinations on your bucket list. Plans are in the making for exclusive travel experiences that are designed for singles 55+.

No matter what your travel style, there will be that special trip for you. And the best part is you will be able to socialize and travel with singles, just like you. People who want to see the world, have fun and share good times.

Here’s how you can help. Please share with me the trips on your personal wish list.

  • Do you want to take an Alaskan cruise?
  • Or would you rather a river cruise in France?
  • Are you a foodie and want a wine and cooking trip to Tuscany?
  • Have you always wanted to hike the Inca Trail?
  • Is the Great Wall of China on your bucket list?
  • What about the National Parks in the USA?
  • The changing of the leaves in New England??
  • New Orleans: Jazz and Cajun cooking??
  • Down under: Australia, New Zealand, or an African Safari?
  • Spend the night on a Junk in Vietnam?
  • Perhaps a theater trip to Broadway, London or Ashland, OR?
  • Golf at St. Andrews in Scotland?
  • The Night Sky in Norway?
  • Or just relax on a beautiful white sand beach?

I could go on and on.

More importantly, I want to know where you want to go. Your feedback will let Stitch plan the perfect trip for you.

I’m looking forward to answering your travel questions and learning about your dream vacations,

Sandy

    Hi Sandy!
Thank you for your blog post! I’m really glad I came across it! It’s been awhile since I really took a trip somewhere (almost 10 years!), and I have really been itching to get away from it all. I know Europe offers so many destinations, but what are your favorites for the winter time? Also, what should I do to get the most out of each city?

    1. Sandy

      Hi Charlotte,
Stitch has a Danube River cruise scheduled for November 3rd; almost winter. We would love to have you join us for that. Here’s the link for more information on our trips:

Would love to meet you on board,
      Sandy

    Sandy,

Just got Michael’s email about the possible Ensenada Cruise and dropped over at his suggestion.

First let me say that trip is of great interest. I’ll be interested in learning more.

I’ve been touring the Nation Parks the last three years with the goal of doing them all. To date I’ve logged 51 of the 59. The removing 8 are all in Alaska so I’d be interested in trips in that direction. I’m also curious how you might address the ‘singles’ tax imposed because of dbl occupancy rules.

      Hi Richard,

Thrilled to know you might join us for the 3 Day Getaway cruise to Mexico in January. Please email me so I can send you more details. info@WeMakeTravelEasy.com

51 out of 59 National Parks. How impressive! I see Denali National Park in your future. 🙂 I think there will be a lot of interest in an Alaskan Cruise with a pre or post trip to Denali. I’ll put that on my list for future Stitch Trips.

Ah the Single Supplement. I feel your pain. Cruises are the worst, they charge 100% of the per person fare. Other types of trips can typically charge from 25% to 100%.

Putting on the tour operator’s hat for a moment; they have to spread their operational costs over the number of people in a group. If there is one person in a room instead of two that reduces the income to cover costs. There are more operational costs than just the food not eaten.

The good news is some operators are becoming sensitive to the many single travelers and that’s why some single supplements have been reduced from 100% to 25 % and sometimes waived.

This is where Stitch Trips can begin to make a difference. One way to save the single supplement is to share a room. On a Stitch Trip, there would be many people who could end up being good roommates. I will do my best to connect people who might benefit from deciding to share a room. As Stitch Trips grows and develops, we will have the clout, backed by the numbers, to negotiate a reduction or perhaps an elimination of the single supplement.

I’m glad you are excited about Stitch Trips and I look forward to meeting you on one of our adventures,
      Sandy

  6. Pearl

    Hi Sandy,

I’m interested in a trip to Brazil in 2016 . I understand there is a
Carnival in Brazil and would love to travel during the time of the festival.

    Thank you,

    Pearl

    1. Sandy

      Hi Pearl,
Yes Carnival in Brazil is very exciting and adventurous. I would strongly recommend that you look into a group tour for this. This is not the kind of trip that I would recommend for a single person. The crowds are huge and some people can get a little over zealous. Lots of drinking goes on all day and late into the night. You will have a better time and be safe if you travel with a tour that has experience getting people to see Carnival from the most advantageous vantage point. You’ll enjoy the best of the experience and come home with wonderful memories.
Brazil requires a visa before you leave the US.
      Start practicing your Samba dancing!
