Speaking From Experience: Finding Love Over 50

This article is part of our “Speaking from Experience” series, which features Stitch members giving their advice on a range of topics from romance through to companionship and everything in between. This month’s article is from longtime Stitch member and Community Champion David, who has been kind enough to share his advice on finding love over 50. Take it away David!

Have you joined the Stitch revolution yet?

Computers and the Internet have changed our social structure as surely as the automobile changed transportation. Below I’ll argue that Membership in Stitch puts over-50 seniors at the leading edge of a 21st-century cultural revolution. Simply put, no matter who or where you are in the English-speaking world, there’s no longer any excuse for being lonely or alone.

Reach out and love someone

Love is a many-splendored thing, which means it comes in many forms. From friendship to affection to head-over-heels, humans function best when we operate from love. Here at Stitch, love is as close as your fingertips. Let your fingers do the screening while you relax at home.

Enhance your chance for romance

How does a musician make it to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice. How do caring seniors find someone to love? Same way.

The love you take is equal to the love you make. If love is like a muscle we must exercise it daily to keep our love-ability strong. Stitch gives us the opportunity to love far-away people as practice for the love we hope to find next door.

Exercise your love capacity

Use it or loose it – we must love to be loved. Stitch is the place for senior love online. Here you’ll find a community of support and understanding as well as Individual Profiles for review and potential connection.

Put the love-odds in your favor

We all want that certain someone who makes us feel “complete.” How many people on your block or street can do this? How many in your neighborhood, city or town? And how will you meet them to find out if they qualify?

By using 21st-century technologies like texting, photo-sharing and nationwide telephone-calling, Stitch helps enlarge our field of possible friendships beyond our local environment. But can digital cyber-relationships be productive, genuine or real? You bet they can.

What is required today is no longer an expansion of technology, but an expansion of our mind. The way individuals interact with the world has changed, and so should we.

Mental teleportation

We still don’t have machines to teleport our bodies, but we can, in fact, teleport our mind. I don’t know about you, but the older I become the more I rely upon thought to keep me happy and engaged.

Here’s my advice, and the point of this blog. When you come to Stitch — I hope you do — throw away all expectation of meeting your ideal companion. Instead, engage the very real people you’ll encounter at the site and practice loving a select few as best you are able. A friendship here, a heart-flutter there, a mentoring or care-giving somewhere else.

Everyone knows romantic love arrives unannounced in unexpected ways. Stitch is a cyber-community. Get involved, be yourself, engage but don’t pursue — just as you would in your local community. Love may tap your cyber-shoulder when you least expect it!

It happened to me.

  1. I enjoyed this article, finding love over 50 by David. It is very well written. He made a lot of good points. Be yourself, get involved with the people on stitch, in the community & the profiles. Practice loving a select few, who knows what will became of it as you open the door to new relationships on stitch.

    1. Thank you, Leslie! My own social life has gone through the roof since I signed up with Stitch – I’m very appreciative.

    1. Thank you, Charles. Everything changed for me when I switched over from an old copper wire landline (local only) to a new fibre optic line (cable) which now gives me toll-free telephone access to all of North America – including Mexico and Canada. Six months since I made this move and couldn’t be more thrilled about it! Let’s call it “digital exploration,” shall we?

  2. Greetings David,

I am from Canada, and I really enjoyed reading your article. Nowadays, it is so difficult to meet meaningful, true, real, and reliable people that we can call friends never mind soul mate. The world has change not for the better, I like progress, and I believe in positive changes I thought with the technology era life would be easier, and simple I was so wrong.

Personally, I find life has become more difficult then ever to navigate through with all these social media every where we turn; there are more and more sadness, people are more isolated, lonely, and fragmented. Then there are also the imposters, the fakes, and the scammers who are taking a toll on a lot of people.

What really happened? Why do we let ourselves buy into these non-sense? I am not perfect, but I don’t let the cyber world decide or define who I am nor do how to live my life, my values are still the same than before and I refuse to let myself been control by the masses.

    1. Thank you, Glorie. I think the Internet is of greatest interest to writers and media communicators like me. I started online in 1996 and have reached thousands of readers who would not otherwise have seen my material. I also post my own videos. So the Web has been a boon to me, personally.

Stitch is a cyber community rather than just a dating service, which makes it different. Also, Stitch verifies its Members, unlike any other online senior meeting place I know of. I encourage you to give it a try!

  3. Under ” Exercise your love capacity”
    “Use it or loose it”

I believe you meant “lose it”, not “loose it”

  4. Hello! I am brazilian, going to London in December, 4. I would like to know people there and make friendship. Beijos from Brasil.

    1. Hi Iza, sounds like a great trip! To meet people on Stitch you’ll need to join as a full member — that way you can then see profiles of other London members when you are there, attend London Stitch events, suggest activities of your own, etc. Hope Stitch helps you meet a range of new people in London!

      Cheers,
      Andrew.

  5. Who from age 57-69 in Metro West Boston wants to Stitch in a nice atmosphere?(especially people that don’t want to go home at 9pm!!!)

  6. David,
Loved your article and your very good advice about expanding our minds to possibilities. Your article is very well written, engaging me from the start and holding my interest to the end. Few articles are able to do that for me. Thanks for sharing.

  7. Hello David I read your article and I couldn’t agree with you more. I just recently joined the Stitch community. I am looking to meet new friends, and possibility that special person leading to a meaningful relationship. I have been pretty much a loner for quite sometime, with my young adult children leaving the nest and living their lives, I felt alone and really no purpose. I as a mom for so long felt that once I raised my children and did all the things that a mom is supposed to do. But once they got grown I felt alone and not needed. So I am happy to find out about the Stitch Community, I am excited to talk to, and meet eventually new friends. I am a little bit shy ,as this is my first time on a website. But life is about taking chances and adventure right??

  8. Great Article David although I have an issue with one part, I don’t want or need anyone to make me feel complete, I’m complete in myself however having the value someone special can add to my life makes my life better for it.

  9. HI David, Great points in this article. The one addition I want to say is to be brave! Step out of the computer sooner rather than later and meet in person. Of course meet in a safe place, and keep it light but meet! I have chatted online with several people but no one seems willing to actually meet. Its impossible to feel another person’s energy just thru emails and messaging. In addition, the energy between two people can only be assessed in person thru conversation.
Pen pals are not typically what most people are seeking. So, be brave, be safe, but meet in person, who knows even if you aren’t attracted romantically, you might meet a new best friend.

  10. Hello David
I am from Canada and just new to Stitch and found your article as refreshing as the dating site. I love the ease into and laid back approach…puts the fun back into cyber dating while the other sites give the jitters.
    Cheers
    Lynn
