Many people approach dating over 50 like going to the dentist: a necessary and uncomfortable experience that just has to be endured.
Dates can be fun – even magical. They let you shine and see yourself in a different light, learn new things about another human being and enjoy the best of what your local area has to offer.
On the other hand, blind dates and online dating in an increasingly disconnected world can sometimes feel like pulling teeth.
Most people who are dating over 50 have experienced major life changes, and look to dating as a way to reconnect with the world around them – to meet new people, have fun experiences, learn more about the world and make life more interesting.
But there is a better way. Stitch is an online social community for people over 50, based around real-world events and activities. Stitch members go to fun events together, get to know people in their neighborhoods, and meet people around shared interests that they have lots in common with. All without the pressures of dating.
Stitch provides an easy, safe and effective way to form deep social connections, companionship and friendships, all while having an excellent time.
Here’s a selection of upcoming Stitch social events that are more fun than dating over 50. Head along to a Stitch event near you and meet new friends.
1. Light up the night sky
Some people say they’re better than fireworks. Chicago Stitch members are heading to a Drone Art Show and Concert. In a breathtaking candlelit setting a talented String Quartet breathes new life into the classics while the drones perform a synchronized dance, lighting up the night sky with a spellbinding light show timed to compliment and enhance the music.
On the other side of the globe, moon-lovers in Sydney enjoy a moon photography experience as they watch the spectacular full moon rise above the Tasman Sea.

2. Take a punt on a river boat tour
On the River Cam in England, a group of Stitchers are planning a punting trip. This is a type of boat ride steered by a long stick pushed into the ground. They’ll enjoy arched bridgeways, overhanging willow trees, historic buildings and peaceful green riverside gardens as they make their way up the river.
In Godalming, Stitch members will be steering their own motor boat and navigating river bends and locks as they travel along the River Wey. They’ll see swans, ducks, geese, open meadows, fields with grazing cattle, and even deer!
Over 3,000 miles away, Stitch members are heading on a genuine paddle boat down Tom’s River in New Jersey. The River Lady captures the ambiance of a 19th century Mississippi paddle boat, and local Stitch members look forward to dinner and dancing on deck.
3. Kick up your heels
In Sydney, Stitch members are taking things to a new level with a Belly Dancing Expo and Middle Eastern music. They’ll witness stunning athleticism and mind-bending moves as contestants show off their skills. We have Oktoberfest celebrations coming up in Marrickville, while, on a different continent, Los Angeles Stitchers are going to enjoy Mariachi Divas in a relaxed outdoor setting.

4. Punk’s not dead
The Dead Kennedys are coming to Melbourne on their world tour, and Stitch members will be rocking out in the front row.
On the other side of the world, a more tranquil and personal evening is to be enjoyed by Stitch members in Connecticut at a Candlelight Concert.
5. See a penguin, visit an island
Have you ever seen a penguin? Stitchers are gathering to witness the marvel of penguins joining together to surf the waves, catch food and return to their nests to feed their young on the beach. On another weekend, Australian Stitch members are getting together to enjoy a trip away to Phillip Island.

6. Fine food is best enjoyed together
Whether it’s an All Out Texas Barbecue, a Tooting Curry night in London or a Brisbane Waters Oyster Festival, Stitch members love their local cuisine, and getting together to enjoy it. In Sydney Stitch members head off to enjoy “The Art of Italian Cheesemaking” from the man whose family introduced Ricotta to Australia. They’ll enjoy the secrets of fine cheesemaking, coming home with bags brimming with delicacies.
7. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry
In Washington, Stitch members will enjoy comedy complimented by wine – a winning combination. Stitchers in Melbourne are attending the Melbourne International Film Festival together, which promises to open eyes and change minds. The best part about the Film Festival is having someone to discuss the experience with afterwards, and Stitch members are in for a treat. In Sydney, Stitchers are attending a Faulty Towers Dining Experience – an interactive improvised comedy spectacular set around a 3 course meal that will have participants crying with laughter.

8. Get outside and explore the world
Stitch events take you across a range of diverse terrains, in person and in the mind. Stitch members in England are going to enjoy a 4-mile walk around Sheffield Bottom, while people who have hiked El Camino are getting together to share stories and tips in Melbourne. In London Stitchers are organizing a trip to Kew Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the largest Victorian glass house in the world. They’ll enjoy the sights and sensations of unseasonable flora and come home inspired to ignite their own gardens.
9. Change your outfit, change your mind
Stitchers in Victoria are enjoying the Martin Grant fashion exhibition on one weekend, and swapping clothes with each other on another! The giant Clothing Swap is held at a wool museum and participants go home with bags of pre-loved items.
In Bath, England, Stitch members host an online event on the last Thursday of every month, called “A Curiosity of Books.” Members attend and share what’s sparking their interest in the land of books at the moment, and leave with a fresh list of books to read.

10. And for something a little bit different
Stitch members in Inverness, Scotland are looking to Strike and Score at the Rollerball Ten Pin Bowling arena. On the other hand, a tour of one of Australia’s “most haunted sites” might give you plenty to question in Manly, as Stitch members head on a Ghost Tour of the Historical Quarantine Station.
If you’ve tried dating after 50 and didn’t find what you were looking for, try Stitch events instead. You’ll laugh, share and form new connections that bring warmth to your life.
